Respect in Sport for Parents

Respect in Sport for Parents

SSA is proud to offer a Respect in Sport (RiS) for Parents platform uniquely specific to SSA Members.

One of the most commonly reported reasons coaches, managers, officials and athletes, of all ages, cite for leaving sport is unacceptable parent behaviour. The Respect in Sport Parent Program will help define a standard of behaviour for all parents and create a more rewarding, safe and respectful environment for everyone involved. Research shows that parents want to do a great job supporting their kids, but are sometimes unsure how, and Respect in Sport for Parents provides the tools to do just that!

This program compliments the existing Activity Leader and Coach Program by reinforcing a parent's role in their child's activities. It empowers parents to:
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of their children
  • Encourage proper communication with officials and coaches
  • Make sport and recreation result in a positive experience for all
SSA Member Organizations may choose to offer this service as an added benefit to their membership or to write their own policy indicating membership requirements.

"As a coach I have taken this program. I found it to be relevant and worthwhile. The biggest hassle in being a coach is dealing with the unruly parent. Many coaches have stopped coaching because of this; I have considered quitting myself because of the unruly parent. Many referees' even kids themselves at the time, have been berated by parents and quit. Without the volunteerism of coaches and a pool of referees the sport will fail. I wish my hockey association would require parents to take this program. Everyone needs to be part of the solution." Hockey Coach Testimonial

"You know I did not want to take the Respect in Sport class as you think it is going to be boring and a waste of time. But I have to admit when I am wrong as I actually took quite a lot out of it. My wife was taking it with me and she kept pointing at me saying yes that is you and I had to admit it was even though I do not perceive myself to be one of those problem parents. It definitely helped me put things in perspective and ground myself in a proper way. I thought the one quote was perfect... the game tonight is the most important thing in the world right now and it does not matter at all! As a parent with two boys playing hockey thank you for the program it was very much worthwhile" Hockey Parent Testimonial

By using the SSA specific RiS for Parents platform, Member Organizations will also have administrative access to track the parents in your organization who have signed up for the course and their progress. The cost to the course is $12 plus taxes per registrant. The program is defaulted to have the user pay, however if requested, the organization can be setup with a pre-registration code and invoiced accordingly.

To gain administrative access:
  1. Go to SSA's RiS for Parents Platform and simply setup an account - do not pay, log out if you reach the payment page: https://sasksoccerparent.respectgroupinc.com/
  2. Email cms@sasksoccer.com with you name and email to confirm this set is complete (email must come from a main or secondary MO Contact, as registered with that SSA, or verification will be sought).
  3. Respect Group will grant you admin access for your organization upon approval by the SSA. They will also by-pass the payment page, so the admin of your organization may complete the program at no cost. You will also receive a document which will assist you in utilizing the admin functions.
  4. You're ready to communicate the course and send out the instructions to your parents!
