Saskatchewan High-Performance Development Centre (HPDC) athlete Sarah Ochitwa (shown above), a fourteen year-old resident of Saskatoon SK, recently returned from a five day U-13 to U-15 National talent identification camp in Vaughan, Ontario. Presented with five solid days of training, select participants from the camp will travel with Head Coach Bev Priestman to the U-15 Women’s CONCACAF Championship in the Cayman Islands this August.
Coach Bev Priestman guided Canada’s Women’s U-17 Team to a quarterfinal spot at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2014 in Costa Rica earlier this year. With this camp the search for the next athletes to represent Canada on the National Stage has commenced. One of the steps in Canada’s Women’s EXCEL pathway, the Canada Soccer Women’s National EXCEL Program operates in six-year cycles across the U-14 to U-17 and U-18 to U-20 age groups. With the Saskatchewan High-Performance Stream closely aligned to the Canada Soccer Excel program, dedicated training, competition environments and Master coaching guide and challenge Saskatchewan’s High-Performance participant.
Sarah Ochitwa was previously identified by Canada Soccer's Technical staff at the Prairie Invitational competition, where she attended for three years within the Saskatchewan Provincial Selects Program. Since 2012 Sarah has also been a member of the Saskatchewan High-Performance Development Centre and has trained as a full-time participant 5-6 days weekly ten months of the year since 2013. Her ongoing dedication to developing every day in both training and matches, while maintaining a mental strength many years her senior; this opportunity was well-earned.
SSA High-Performance Stream Manager and HPDC Director Coach Terrol Russell, is very proud for Sarah to have achieved this honor. “Much respect and recognition is given to all those who have played a part in helping Sarah achieve this National invitation. She drives herself and her teammates to achieve their best every day. Sarah represented Saskatchewan very professionally and is setting a performance standard for all Saskatchewan High-Performance participants.”
With Saskatchewan Soccer’s High-Performance Stream gaining momentum, the National level is now a realistic goal for Saskatchewan Soccer’s High-Performance participant. Driven by a strategic plan endorsed by Dr. Peter Davis of Sport Performance Management and Canada Soccer, a universal developmental philosophy ensures the late maturer is retained through maturational-based programming and that all participants are guided along a dedicated Athlete-Management pathway.
