2018-10-08A Full Recap of Saskatchewan Teams at the Toyota National Championships
It was both an exciting and grueling five days for our Saskatchewan teams at the 2018 Canada Soccer Association Toyota National Championships. Hosted in three locations, Laval, QC, Surrey, BC and hometown Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, clubs from all over Canada took to the pitch for the ultimate prize of top spot in the nation.
Under 15 Girls
FC Regina would finish the Qualification rounds with a 1-0-1 tally. They would dominate in their match versus YT – Whitehorse Yukon Selects and were unable to find footing against a stronger AB – Calgary South West United SA. Their first seeding match was against QC- Lakeshore, which ended in a 4-2 loss for the girls. With that loss, they faced a second Quebec team, QC-CS Repent which also ended in a 3-0 loss. The team would face MB – Winnipeg for final placement. The girls would battle, but were an unable to come away with the win, and so, they secured 8th spot in the competition.

Under 15 Boys
FC Regina would finish the Qualification round with a 0-0-2 tally coming out of Group A. They were unable to put points on the board versus two strong teams, QC-AS Blainville (8-0) and NL-Feildians AA St. John`s (3-0). Their first seeding match would see the boys versus BC- Vancouver Island Wave. They would score their first goal of the match in their 4-1 loss. Next up was PE-PEI FC, who would blank the boys 3-0. Their last match of the competition would find the team facing off versus NS- Halifax Dunbrack SC. Coming out strong, the boys secured a 2-0 victory and with that secured the 11th place in the competition.

Under 17 Girls
FC Regina would finish the qualification round with a 0-0-2 tally. They faced a very strong QC-Lakeshore SC in their first match and would finish the match in a 9-1 loss. In their second match, they would post a couple points on the board in their 4-2 loss to NL- St. John`s SC. Their first seeding match would end in a 3-1 loss versus BC- Surrey United SC. They would then take on NT – Yellowknife Bay SC and would come away with a 2-0 win, before taking on NB – Fredericton DSA in their final match of the competition, which would end in a 6-3 win for the girls. With these last two wins, the team secured 10th place in the competition.

Under 17 Boys
Saskatoon Selects would finish their Qualification round with a 1-0-1 tally and entered the Seeding phase in 2nd spot in Group A. Their first seeding match would be against BC- Surrey Un, which would end in a very close and devastating 1-0 loss for the boys. This result would see the team facing NL- Feildians, with the winner playing for 5th or 6th place. The team from the east would come away with the win in penalty kicks and the Selects were now playing for 7th or 8th. The team would battle in the last match in the competition versus their first opponent in the tournament, MB –Winnipeg Bonivital SC. The game would end in a 2-0 loss for the Selects and the team would secure 8th place.

Senior Women
The Saskatoon SK Impact FC would finish the Qualification round with a 0-2-1 record. They would draw 1-1 against a very strong BC – Surrey United SC, and would also tally another 1-1 draw versus NL – Holy Cross FC. With a devastating 2-1 loss versus NS – Halifax Dunbrack SC, the ladies would move into the seeding round in 4th place in Group B. They would capitalize on some key chances versus NB – Fredericton Picaroons Reds and would end the match in a 3-0 win. This would put the team in 7th place in the competition.

Senior Men
In their inaugural visit to the National Championships, Saskatoon Revolution would finish the Qualification round in 2nd position in Group A, with a 2-2-0 tally. In their first match, they would finish in a 1-1 draw vs. BC – Surrey BC Tigers Hurricanes. Game two would see both teams battle over 90 minutes to a 0-0 draw. The men would come charging out versus NB – Fredericton Picaroons Reds and post two goals in their 2-0 win. Their last game in qualification was another nail biter, with the Revolution coming away with the 2-1 win in front of the homecrowd versus AB – Edmonton Scottish FC and a berth to the Bronze medal match. Nothing would be decided in regulation and extra time against NL –Holy Cross FC, with both teams notching one goal apiece in the first ninety. It would be the Revolution who would come away the victors in Penalty kicks, earning 3rd place in the competition!
