Age Classifications Structure

2017-07-27

To: Saskatchewan Soccer Association Member Organizations
Re: Age Classifications Structure

On July 6, 2017 a communication was sent to all Member Organizations regarding revisiting the Age Classifications Structure.  A survey was initiated to collect feedback on a preferred structure and on success indicators to allow for a review of this decision.

We want to extend our sincere thanks to the Member Organizations who completed the survey and provided their feedback.  In undertaking this process, the ultimate goal is to align age classifications to ensure we have a consistent framework for competitions, which adhere to LTPD, and ensure a unified vision to organize soccer delivery province wide.

The feedback received indicates overwhelming support for the following structure to guide the Competitive Stream and local play at the grassroots level.  The age classification structure outlined below will take effect as of Outdoor 2018.

During the process additional success indicators were provided which will be used to review the decision at the end of the Outdoor 2019.   The following Measures will be used when reviewing this decision:
  • Player Registration and Retention:
    • Comparison of participation levels across each age bracket (pre decision vs. post decision)
    • Is the growth or decline within the standard deviation for each age group?
    • Is there a difference between the impact on rural and urban members?
  • Coach Registration and Retention:
    • Comparison of participation levels (pre decision vs. post decision)
    • Growth or decline of number of registered coaches
  • Coaching Education and Licensing:
    • Growth or decline of coaches moving through the licensing stream
      • At what stage are they starting and do they continue with courses at the next stage of the pathway?
    • Are more coaches pursing higher level coaching education?
  • Tournament Registration:
    • Are more teams competing in Provincial Tournaments?
  • Match Officials:
    • Is there growth or decline in number of registered match officials?
    • Is there a higher or lower number of courses on a yearly basis?
  • Member Organizations:
    • Do member organizations believe the change had a positive effect on their operations?
    • Did all members follow the age classifications? i.e. Did we achieve alignment?

Registration Changes and Reminders
Effective Outdoor 2018, the SSA offers participation in the following age and playing categories:

Playing Categories

REMINDER: All Member Organizations must ensure that all participants they, or their entities, provide service to on an ongoing basis are registered with the SSA.

Information on how these changes effect 17-18 Indoor registration reporting will be emailed out next week.

SSA Policy amendments related to age classification changes will be posted on the website in the near future.

Structuring Age Groups and Game Formats
We appreciate that the proposed age classification structure may be challenging for some Member Organizations to execute, given the size of the organization or the number of registered participants in the various age categories. If your Member Organization has concerns a regarding delivery of the structure, please contact dos@sasksoccer.com for assistance.

Tournament Sanctioning
With the age classifications now completed we also will initiate a review of our tournament sanctioning processes.  We will consult with membership by early November 2017 to gain feedback on improving tournaments and sharing best practices.  Changes, if any, would come into effect in Outdoor 2018.

Provincial Championships
As communicated on June 15, 2017, Provincials will be held in the following age categories and formats:

In order for alignment to occur we need everyone's support. By working together, we can continue to grow and develop the game to unprecedented levels within our province!
