Goalpost Safety

2017-06-01

Together we can ensure we create a safe environment for our athletes and communities.

On May 12th in Ontario, a devastating accident occurred when a portable goal fell on 15 year old Garrett Mills, resulting in his death. Garrett was swinging on the goal at time.

Unanchored goalposts present a serious danger; there have been at least 41 fatalities in North America due to unanchored goalposts.

Safety is always of utmost importance, and everyone must do their part to ensure all participants are safe and that incidents like this do not occur again. Please educate your children and community about goal post safety, and ensure all portable goals are properly stored in the off season and anchored when out on the pitch. Under no circumstances should children or adults be allowed to climb, swing on or play with the structures of the goalposts.

We would like to remind Member Organizations of the SSA's Portable Goal Safety Policy, available on our website; Section 13, Article 2.3: http://sasksoccer.com/page.php?page_id=59009
