Details about the 2017 Canada Summer Games Program Released

The Saskatchewan Soccer Association (SSA) is pleased to announce details of the 2017 Canada Summer Games Program delivered within the SSA High-Performance Stream Pathway. The Canada Summer Games program occurs every four years.  The 2017 Canada Summer Games will be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  The Female soccer competition will run from July 27 -August 4, 2017 and the Male soccer competition from August 5 - 13, 2017 (including travel days).  The competition will played at the Ralph Contafio Soccer Complex and will include one match per day over the five day period.
 
2017 Canada Games Coaching Staff
 
The SSA is pleased to announce the Head Coaches for the 2017 Canada Games program:
 
Female Program: Head Coach – Jason Jones, JJ Soccer Academy (USSF ‘A’/NCCP Comp Dev).
 
Male Program: Head Coach – Chris Zoller, ASTRA Academy (CSA National B/NCCP Comp Dev).
 
All additional staff members, including program mentor coaches, will be published at a later date. 
 
2017 Canada Games Athlete Identification Phase
 
Male and Female Training to Compete High-Performance athletes born in the ’99/’00/’01/’02 birth years from across Saskatchewan and are currently participating in SSA-sanctioned High Performance Training Centres or Dedicated Players Programs are invited to participate in the 2017 Canada Games Identification Process.
 
Athletes will be identified during the SSA High-Performance Stream 11v11 Showcase Series. During the HP Showcase Series, potential Canada Summer Games athletes will be evaluated by the coaching staff (male and female), within the five pillars of SSA High-Performance Development (Technical, Tactical, Physical, Psychological, and Social).  An initial pool of 30 High-Performance athletes will be identified from the January, February, March, and April 2017 competition weekends.   A final roster of 18 athletes and five injury reserves will be selected in June 2017, who will attend the August 2017 Canada Summer Games. 
 
 High Performance Showcase Series
 
Building off of the 2012-2016 Indoor Showcase League and the 2016 T2T Combine, the SSA has now transitioned high performance competition into an 11v11, High Performance Showcase Series running over eight months for 2017.
 
Working in conjunction with the Provincial Soccer League (Competitive Stream), the High Performance Showcase Series will operate one weekend per month, excluding May, June, August, and December in its first year. The High Performance Showcase Series is designed to meet the criteria of Canada Soccer for standards-based, high performance competition, and aligns to the new Canada Soccer Pathway. Designed to work in association with the High Performance Training Centres and Dedicated Players Program network, the High Performance Showcase Series provides Saskatchewan’s high performance athletes, coaches and officials with Intra-provincial and Inter-provincial competition.
 
The 2017 Showcase Series Indoor Phase 1 is scheduled to take place on the following weekends.  Specific game schedules will be sent out closer to the events:
 
  • January 27-29, 2017 – Prince Albert
  • February 11-12, 2017 – Moose Jaw
  • March 24-26, 2017 – Saskatoon
  • March 31-April 2, 2017 – Moose Jaw
  • April 21-23, 2017 - Saskatoon

Preparation & Competition Phase (June – August 2017)
 
At the end of the Identification Phase, identified athletes (potential travel roster and injury reserve athletes) will be invited to participate in the 2017 Canada Summer Games Preparation and Competition phase.   This phase will include preparation events in May and June as well as a pre-competition training even in July in Regina. 
 
Female program Preparation & Competition Phase 2017 dates:
  • May 6-7 – Preparation weekend, Saskatoon
  • June 10-11 – Preparation weekend, Saskatoon
  • July 10-13 – Pre-competition training week, Regina
  • July 27-Aug 4 – Canada Games Female competition (including travel days)
 
Male program Preparation & Competition Phase 2017 dates:
  • May 6-7 – Preparation weekend, Saskatoon
  • June 10-11 – Preparation weekend, Saskatoon
  • July 20-23 - Pre-competition training weekend, Regina
  • Aug 5 – Aug 13 - Canada Games Male competition (including travel days)
 
 Preparation and Competition Phase Fee:
  • Fee: $500.  Further details about payment deadlines and payment options will be sent out in 2017.
  • The Canada Games Program Fee includes all accommodation and meal requirements while at the pre-competition training event.  Also included are all accommodation, meal and travel requirements while at competition.
  • For Preparation weekend, travel to and from the training centre (Saskatoon) will be the responsibility of the athletes.  Athletes will be billeted with local Canada Games pool families for this preparation events so meals and accommodation will be provided.
  • For the Pre-competition training weekend in Regina, athletes and coaches will be staying in, eating meals at the Residence at Luther College on the U. of R. campus, and training locally.  Transportation to and from Regina is the responsibility of the athletes.
  • Injury Reserve athletes will not be required to pay the Competition phase fee unless they are pulled into the travel roster due to injury.
 
Final Remarks
 
The Canada Summer Games competition is an opportunity to expose Saskatchewan’s identified High Performance athletes to competition against other High Performance athletes from  across Canada in a multi-sport environment.  We wish all participating athletes all the best in their quest to compete for a spot on the 2017 squads.
