Castro named to FISU futsal team

2016-04-15

University of Regina women's soccer player Daniela Castro has been named to the Canadian team that will compete at the FISU World University Futsal Championship in Goiânia, Brazil in July.

Castro appeared in 13 of the Cougars' 14 games and tied for the team lead with two goals in the 2015 season. The third-year midfielder scored a penalty kick goal in the team's 1-0 win over Winnipeg on Sept. 12 and netted another goal in a Sept. 27 draw against Mount Royal.

"It is a great honour and truly justified that Daniela shall represent her family, university and country as a member of Canada's first ever entry in the FISU Women's Futsal tournament," Cougars head coach Bob Maltman said of the Calgary product. "Daniela has tremendous passion for the game and possesses sound technical skills and tactical awareness that are necessary in the close confines of the futsal playing surface."

Castro is one of 12 players from across the CIS who will be led by head coach Tino Fusco of Mount Royal University. The tournament will run from July 4-10.

"To be honest, it all seems unreal. I am so incredibly grateful to be given the amazing opportunity to wear Canada's logo on my chest," Castro said. "It has been my dream to play for a national team ever since I can remember and I think it's going to be the experience of a lifetime. I believe this experience will not only help me grow as an athlete, but also as a person."

Note: Futsal is a modified version of soccer that features five players per side on an indoor field.
