INFORMATION RELEASE

2016 Saskatchewan Soccer Association High-Performance Stream Training to Train Combine For Female & Male U13-U15 (2001/2002/2003) Athletes

Regina, SK -The Saskatchewan Soccer Association (SSA) is pleased to announce details of the 2016 High-Performance Stream Combine for U13 (2003)/U14 (2002)/U15 (2001) Female and Male Saskatchewan athletes.  Three weekends consisting of competition and testing will be used to expose participants from across the province to the High-Performance Stream, develop a High-Performance athlete identification database and as a mechanism to identify athletes for future High-Performance Stream opportunities beginning during the outdoor 2016 season, including:

  • High-Performance Development Centre (HPDC) and future Canadian Soccer Association Regional EXCEL (REX) programming
  • High-Performance Centre of Excellence (HPCOE)
  • High-Performance Centre of Goalkeeping Excellence (HPCGE)
  • High-Performance Prairie League (HPPL)
  • High-Performance Indoor Showcase League (HPISL)
  • 2017 Canada Summer Games/2019 Western Canada Summer Games.
Background Information

In 2011, the SSA began implementing a systematic change to the provincial development model, where a Stream-Based Maturational Model replaced the long antiquated Chronological Pyramidal Model.  The core result of this change is that each individual participant will have the opportunity to self-select the 'Stream' that is a best fit for their own personal goals.  Following an introduction to soccer within the 'Grassroots' Stream, each participant can subsequently transition into the Recreational, Competitive, or High-Performance Stream.  Moving across the Streams requires is an increase in training and competition standards (e.g., coaching certification/training hours, sport science integration), and greater focus on mentality, discipline, and lifestyle choice.  Participants within a Stream-Based Model are no longer subjectively selected based on criteria such as physical size.  Placement within the Stream of choice for a participant is determined by maturational attainment within the SSA's Five Pillars of Development (Physical, Psychological, Social, Technical, and Tactical).  This ensures an athlete-centred framework supports each individual participant's development and reduces the chance that athletes are missed during the identification process.

High-Performance Stream Program Transition

Over the past three years, High-Performance athlete identification and coach development in Canada has gone through evolutionary change.  With the elimination of competitions like the National All-Stars and National identification and training programs such as the Regional and National Training Centres, athletes and coaches are now provided new opportunities to reach higher levels within the game. In response to these changes, as well as the cancellation of the Pacific Challenge in 2016, the Saskatchewan Provincial Selects Program (PSP) has also been eliminated. In its place have come new and revised programming initiatives that better fit with the SSA's High-Performance Strategic Plan and Canada Soccer's new Pathway.

Listed below is information about the High-Performance Combine that will be replacing the Provincial Selects Program and details on each of the individual programs making up the SSA's High-Performance Stream.

High-Performance Stream T2T Combine Outline
  •  Dates & Location
    • February 19-21 Saskatoon
    • March 25-27 Moose Jaw
    • April 08-10 in Saskatoon
  •  Format
    • Each Combine weekend will include a testing component, a 9v9 or 11v11 match-based component, and meetings on High-Performance athlete development.
    • All testing results will be held by the SSA High-Performance Stream Manager for the purposes of maintaining a province-wide athlete database.  Athlete results will be used to help direct a pathway for athletes and member organizations throughout the province.
  • Combine Match Design:
o   In advance of each combine weekend, each participant will be placed on a pre-selected roster.  The exact number of athletes and squads will be determined by the total number of program applicants.
o   Each roster will participate in at least two 9v9 or 11v11 matches during each competition weekend.  This will result in a minimum of six evaluation opportunities during the three combine weekends.

This process will allow participating athletes to 'showcase' their skills to Provincial High-Performance Stream evaluation staff.  To ensure each athlete has the best chance of achieving success, athletes may be rotated between positions.

Preparation Phase Athlete Identification:
  • During each combine weekend, athletes will be evaluated within the five pillars of SSA High-Performance Development.  The five Pillars of Development include: Physical, Psychological, Social, Technical, and Tactical components.
  • Please note: match results are not the focus of the Combine.  Instead, individual athletes are evaluated both in testing sessions and in match-play for future opportunities within the High-Performance Stream.

Preparation Phase Registration Process & Fee:
  • Late registrations will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. on January 26, 2016.  On-site registrations will not be accepted. All late registrations will include a $25.00 fee.

Coach Development
  • Coaches that are interested in High-Performance development are welcome to attend and learn about the SSA High-Performance Stream from an inside perspective.  Participating coaches will be guided on the workings and implementation of our framework, philosophy, and underlying development model.
  • Coaches interested in attending the Combine may contact Joan Nash, SSA Technical Administrator (Contact information is at the bottom of this release).  A limited number of spots will be available. Therefore, only coaches interested in eventually pursuing High-Performance certification need consider applying.

High-Performance Stream Program Outline
  • High-Performance Development Centre (CSA Regional Excel)
    • The HPDC is in its fourth year of implementation.  Previously referred to as the Regional Training Centre and the National Development Centre, the HPDC program is presently applying for National certification as a CSA Regional Excel Centre (REX).  The HPDC program is centred on developing select female Training to Train and Training to Compete athletes.  Athletes participating in the HPDC program train 5-6 days each week for 10-10 ½ months and are surrounded by a team of developmental specialists in sport specific and athlete specific development.  Successes achieved within the HPDC program include a 100% graduation rate to College/University, 13 current Nationally identified athletes, one current youth National Teams Pool Athlete, and two senior athletes who recently signed for the Swansea Football Club in Swansea, Wales.
  • High-Performance Centre of Excellence
    • The HPCOE is a program that is relatively new to the High-Performance Stream.  In development for over two years, entities from throughout the province may apply to be part of a Provincial network of development centres.  A revised application process (Centre of Excellence 2.0) is currently in development and planned to be released in early 2016.  With the goal to have HPCOE centres covering the province within the next two years, athletes from all corners in Saskatchewan will potentially have the opportunity receive the fundamental training they need to succeed in achieving their individual goals.
    • Current Sanctioned Centres of Excellence include:
      • ASTRA Academy - Centred in Saskatoon and directed by Coach Percy Hoff.
      • QC Soccer - Centred in Regina and directed by Coach Hugh Dooley.
  • High-Performance Centre of Goalkeeping Excellence
    • With Goalkeeping being a specialized position, a specific program has been developed to provide directed training to identified Goalkeepers.  Coaches Zlatan Dautbegovic in Saskatoon and Coach Chris Chisholm in Regina have worked to produce many quality Goalkeepers that have been identified at National competition or transitioned into the next step in their careers.
    • Recently Ashley Kambeitz who was a graduate of the SSA Centre of Goalkeeping Excellence started for Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee.  Not only did Ashley receive two Defensive Player of the Week honors for the NAIA Mid-South Conference, but also was one of seventeen athletes who received a Second Team Mid-South Conference Second Team Award.
  • High-Performance Indoor Showcase League
    • The ISL is heading into its fourth year allowing Saskatchewan's High-Performance athletes, coaches, and officials to participate in 11v11 soccer year-round.  Showcasing HPDC and HPCOE athletes to province and visiting Collegiate and National coaches, the ISL plays an important role in ensuring participants continue to acquire full-sided matches during the Indoor season.
  • High-Performance Prairie League
    • The HPPL is designed to meet the standards for Canadian Youth High-Performance Leagues set by the Canadian Soccer Association.  Currently in the trial stage with its first pilot competition having occurred in September, 2015 with the Manitoba Soccer Association, the SSA is currently working with our partners to build a full schedule for release Spring 2017.  Designed to be a standards-based league similar to that in Ontario and British Columbia, select pilot events will continue in 2016.
Final Remarks

The High-Performance Development Stream Combine is an opportunity for Saskatchewan's U13-U15 soccer participants to 'showcase' themselves for identification.  As of September 01, 2016 the SSA's Stream-Based model will be fully implemented within Saskatchewan.  In preparation for that time when specific programs are released across the province, athletes and coaches can now acquire early identification, education and experience.

We wish all participating athletes all the best in their quest to be identified for Saskatchewan's current and future High-Performance programming.
