Sports Medicine Workshops: Sports Taping and Sports First Aid

2015-08-14

The Saskatchewan Soccer Association (SSA), in conjunction with the Sport Medicine and Science Council Saskatchewan (SMSCS), is very pleased to announce the next series of sport medicine workshops, which will be available, free of charge, to registered coaches and team personnel this fall. Following the successful launch of this program which saw the delivery of workshops focused on Injury Care and Prevention and Return to Sport Following Injury in April, the SSA will host both components of the SMSCS 'Sport Safety Certificate of Completion' in preparation for the indoor playing season as follows:

Workshop: Sport Taping
Date: Saturday, September 19/15
Time: 9:00am-5:00pm
Location: Cosmo Civic Centre Theatre
3130 Laurier Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7L 5J7
Consultant: Al Bodnarchuk

Workshop: Sport First Aid
Date: Saturday, November 28/15
Time: 9:00am-5:00pm
Location: Crown Room at Travelodge Hotel and Conference Centre Regina
4177 Albert Street South, Regina, SK S4S 3R6
Consultant: Scott Anderson

The Sport Taping Workshop is a 7-hour practical workshop with content that deals with types of soft tissue injuries, cycle and mechanism injuries, stages of healing, assessing and return to sport guidelines, knowing when to tape vs. not to tape, ankle wrapping, ankle taping, wrist taping, thumb & finger taping, hip wrap, and tensor bandaging.

The Sport First Aid Workshop is a 7-hour classroom workshop with content that deals with sport specific issues relating to liability, fitness & injury prevention, facility awareness, protective equipment, emergency action plans, the medical kit, life threatening injuries, injury recognition, and common injuries all geared towards sport in general.

Upon completion of both of these workshops as well as having valid CPR & Standard First Aid, individuals may complete an application form through the SMSCS to receive recognition through the 'Sport Safety Program Certificate of Completion'. As a part of the ongoing provision of sports medicine training and support opportunities, the SSA plans to deliver these same workshops in the opposite locations in advance of the outdoor playing season for individuals wishing to complete both components.

As a part of the Grassroots, Recreational and Competitive Stream Plans, these workshops will support coaching development and equip participants with new knowledge to support athlete participation and development. With few teams within the Grassroots, Recreational and Competitive Streams having access to sport medicine support on a regular basis, these workshops, which will be delivered by highly trained and experienced SMSCS Consultants, will provide coaches and team personnel with a foundation to support athletes under their care during the playing season.

Workshops are free to attend for any registered coach or team personnel in Saskatchewan; however, participants must register in advance. Space is limited in each workshop and registrations will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Individuals from outside the soccer community may be accepted in to these workshops with a registration fee, space permitting.
