Information Release - Significant Judgement in Favour of SSA

2015-05-26

REGINA - ON May 11th 2015 the Saskatchewan Soccer Association received a written judgement from Queens Bench Justice McMurty in relation to an action brought forward by the Regina Soccer Association against the Saskatchewan Soccer Association; Regina Soccer Association vs Saskatchewan Soccer Association (QBG 936/2015).

The action was brought forward as a result of the Saskatchewan Soccer Association's approval of Queen City United Soccer Club as an Associate Member.

The judgment dismissed all of the claims advanced by the Regina Soccer Association.  Justice McMurtry in her ruling focused on the interests of the participants of Queen City United Soccer and their desire to participate as an Associate Member in the SSA.

The judgement confirmed the sole governance authority of the SSA Board of Directors to promote growth in the game through the approval of Membership applications. This decision re-confirms the direction received recently from FIFA that disputes of this nature should remain within the soccer community, under the authority of the governing Board, rather than coming before the courts.

With the confirmation that jurisdiction over membership decisions lies with the governing body, the SSA Board has extended an invitation to the RSA Board in the hopes of re-developing  a more positive and productive working relationship, working together for the betterment of soccer in the Regina area and the province as whole.

Should additional information become available the SSA will continue to update members and the soccer community as appropriate in the future.
