SSA ANNOUNCES NEW FUTSAL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES
2015-02-27SSA ANNOUNCES NEW FUTSAL DEVELOPMENT INITAITIVES
Friday, February 27, 2015
The Saskatchewan Soccer Association (SSA) is very pleased to announce several new initiatives aimed at developing futsal in Saskatchewan. Futsal is the only indoor soccer game recognized by FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, and is played, 5-aside, on a smaller surface (court) with a low bounce (futsal) ball that allows each player to make technical and tactical decisions in a productive environment that still encourages the physical and social elements associated with soccer.
Futsal is a fast-paced and skillful game that can be used as a developmental tool for soccer during the indoor training period or as a stand-alone sport. Videos from the recent FIFA Futsal World Cup Thailand 2012, including the Top 10 Goals, highlights from the final featuring Spain versus Brazil and the full final match emphasize the highly entertaining nature of futsal.
As futsal grows internationally and across Canada, the SSA is beginning to develop tools for implementation and plans to expand futsal opportunities throughout Saskatchewan. To support the development of futsal, Kevin Wagner, Head Coach of the Lakeland College Men’s and Women’s Futsal Teams, winners of six medals in the Alberta College Athletes Association over the past four years, has been appointed as the SSA Futsal Development Lead.
“Futsal is a great indoor game that can be played to its full capacity across our Province,” explains Wagner. “I’m excited to be involved in developing the game of futsal, which in the long run can aid in developing soccer players in Saskatchewan throughout the development pathway”.
Work is already underway, with the development of the Futsal in Saskatchewan: Futsal Manual, which has been created to assist communities from across Saskatchewan in establishing futsal programs. This resource is available now in the new futsal section of the SSA website.
Wagner’s first task as Futsal Development Lead is to assemble and lead a work group to support futsal implementation through Introduction to Futsal Clinics, which are envisioned to becoming available to interested groups in late spring 2015, as well as beginning the process of long term planning for futsal in Saskatchewan. Registered members with experience or interest in futsal are encouraged to complete the Expression of Interest Form available on the website and forward it to Kevin Wagner at the email address below by March 15, 2015 for consideration.
For more information on futsal and SSA-led futsal initiatives, please visit the SSA website or contact Kevin Wagner, Futsal Development Lead, at 306-821-0627 or kevin.wagner@lakelandcollege.ca or Dave Nutt, Director of Soccer Operations at 306-975-0826 or d.nutt@sasksoccer.com.
