Important Respect in Sport Certification Update
2015-01-19
We are writing to remind you that all Coaches and Team Personnel currently active in the Indoor Season must have RiS and provide their number as part of their registration. Despite the Outdoor numbers SSA records indicate that only 20% of current coaches and team personnel are properly registered for Indoor. Only 238 of 1159 have provided their RiS # as part of registration.
As of October 31st, 2014 all Indoor Coaches and Team Personnel for Youth and Mini teams were required to have RiS Certification prior to participating in their first soccer related activity.
SSA policy indicates that:
1.4.3 The onus is on the individual to provide verification of their RiS certification upon registering or by the required deadline dates noted above.
The Member Organization is then responsible to provide that information to the SSA as part of the registration process. We understand that many Coaches and team personnel may have their RiS but we did not receive that information as part of registration. This problem will be alleviated once all participants register online through Goalline, however, in the interim:
Step 1: Please post this letter and circulate it directly to all coaches and team personnel in your organization.
Step 2: Please ensure that all coaches & team personnel currently active have RiS or notify them that they are not eligible to participate until such time as they provide their certification number to you.
We have made significant strides this past year with RiS. As we enter the 2015 year SSA will need to ensure that compliance with RiS standards are being enforced.
Step 3: We would ask you to support this initiative through random checks on game sheets or tournament rosters to audit RiS compliance.
Step 4: SSA will implement similar practices and has implemented the following Compliance policy amendment:
NEW COMPLIANCE POLICY:
SSA Policy, Section Thirteen, Article - 1.4.4. Sanctioned Events and Tournaments
- As of January 1 2015:
a) All Coaches and Team Personnel entering a sanctioned tournament, an SSA or SSA Member Organization operated game or travelling out of province must provide their RiS Certification # when submitting their roster.
b) All organizations receiving rosters with non-RiS certified team personnel need to advise the team that their registration/roster is not complete until such time as a RiS # has been provided for all Coaches and Team Personnel.
Please Note: We understand that this may take some time to fully implement; however, this is an important step to ensuring all team personnel have completed their RiS. We ask for your full cooperation to implement the amended RiS policy.
On a related topic, Sask Sport has recently advised all Provincial Sport Governing Bodies that "Speak Out has been retired by Hockey Canada, and hockey coaches are required to take the Respect in Sport program (no transfer or recognition of equivalency from former Speak Out training)." (Sask Sport Dec. 5, 2014)
The change in Speak Out may also impact some soccer coaches who have claimed equivalency to RiS using their Hockey Speak Out certification for soccer. Thosecoaches need to be advised that they need to complete RiS and May 1, 2015 to complete RiS to remain active.
We thank you for your anticipated cooperation.
